What is the weight of cedar v.s. paulownia?

  • Cedar is rated at 22 lbs per cubic foot – Janka Hardness: 320 lbf (1420 N)
  • Paulownia is rated at 18 lbs per cubic foot – Janka Hardness: 300 lbf (1,330 N)
  • Paulownia Wood Total = 18 % decrease in weight

White Cedar strip canoes & kayaks kits

Cedar is the usual goto wood for canoe ribs and planking. Its light weight, strength, flexibility and rot resistance can not be matched by any other except paulownia wood. Production of northern white cedar lumber is mainly in Maine and the Great Lake States, yet white cedar, it is still very difficult to find, select and sort out the knots and defect-free lumber that is required for kayak construction. Paulownia is usually knot free which is something common to the species.

How many hours does it take to build a paulownia strip canoe DIY style?

What can an amateur builder expect? As a guideline a first time builder who is making a stemless 15′ Anglers Day with purchased seats and thwarts, simple decks, and no fancy marquetry should commit a minimum of 10 full weekends. That’s 20 full days or 160 hours.
“I think it’s really worth the experience. I hope you try it!” It takes a lot of time, around 130 – 160 hours on average. So when it’s finished and you’ve created a beautiful, strong, light paulownia strip canoe, and you will be proud of your unique creation.

How much wood do I need for a paulownia strip canoe?
It takes 1200-to-1300 lineal feet of NWC cedar or paulownia strips to build most tandem canoes, roughly $450-500 for strips. An easy method to figure the lineal footage you need for any particular hull design is to measure the the distance gunwale to gunwale around the center form.

Northern white cedar lumber costs $4 to $7 per square foot, this variety is less dense than other cedars, making it easy to cut and maneuver.
Paulownia lumber grown in North America cost $4 to $8 per square foot, this wood is used in a variety of water action sports from surfboards, paddle boards, skis etc.

How heavy is a cedar strip canoe v.s. a paulownia strip canoe?
For standard strip built construction with 1/4″ thick western red cedar strips with 6 ounce fiberglass inside and out, a good estimate will be 0.7 pound per square foot of surface area. In other words a boat like the Guillemot with a surface area of 47 square feet, this will give a bare hull weight of about 32 pounds. Using paulownia wood strips in this same build you can expect a total bare hull weight of 26 lbs saving you a total of 6 lbs of total weight.

The first thing is to answer the question of what is Paulownia ? The paulownia’s tree is one of the fastest growing trees on earth. Once harvested, you do not have to replant it as it will regrow new shoots from the stumpage. It’s a leafy fast growing tree that belongs to the family of paulowniaceae, it is one of the deciduous trees leaf. It has its origin in Southeast Asia, specifically Chinese, it is also known as the Empress tree.

In Japan it is commonly known as kiri, reaches 15 feet in height in its first year, this type of development is more typical of a plant than a tree.

This fact has a positive impact on our planet, since it greatly helps to combat climate change for carbon projects which nowadays it’s something very valuable for a nature based solution.

A full growth paulownia tree captures 10 times more CO2 than the rest of the tree species thanks to its rapid growth.

On the other hand, the Paulownia tree has the reputation of being a miraculous tree because it purifies the soil where it anchors its roots and it is capable of sprouting up to seven times once it has been cut.

The paulownia tree is resistant to pests and diseases due to low oil content and resins. It’s leaves are big they can reach up to 35-40 cm. They are also rich in nitrogen and can be used as an alternative cattle fodder for feeding.

WHAT IS PAULOWNIA WOOD?

Paulownia wood or kiri wood has a light color with pink reflections and does not have knots and its main characteristic is its lightness, reaching an average density of around at 280 Kg / m3.

Apart from this, thanks to its porosity, Paulownia has great attributes such as its thermal and acoustic insulator. It is also a wood very resistant to humidity and putrefaction, and thanks to its easy handling, it’s a material that users find to be very versatile and easy to handle. Besides this we can also assure that this type of wood also allows users to apply any type of stain, varnish, color.

Paulownia Wood is the Less Expensive, Stronger lightweight Alternative Wood. Paulownia wood advance material composite applications far exceeds balsa in the categories of strength and weight.

Balsa has been incorrectly considered to have the highest strength to weight ratios of any wood in the world. Paulownia has been thoroughly tested and found to have a higher strength to weight ratio than Balsa! Auburn University tested the strength of 18 lb p/cubic ft. Paulownia against Balsa, with an average weight of 10 lbs p/cubic foot.

Paulownia timber is light and in extremely strong, that makes it preferable, when this correlation is important. The timber of P. elongata and P. fortunei is half the weight of oak and lighter than coniferous species timber. The high ratio of strength/weight makes the Paulownia timber irreplaceable in shipbuilding and aviation. Excellent characteristics for many types of wood products — light-colored and mostly knot-free, strong and even-grained, density between that of balsa and poplar (15 to 19 pounds per cubic ft.), which is about half the density (weight) of pine, insect and fire resistant – it possesses unlimited applications.

The low weight is the main advantage of the Paulownia timber. The correlation strength-weight (main quality coefficient) in comparison with other timber species is high, which makes the Paulownia suitable for some applications that require soft but relatively strong wood. Coefficient of deformation is lower than the most commonly used timber. It does not warp, crack or deform during drying and objects made from paulownia retain their original form.
The timber is water-resistant, it is exceptionally stable, withstands warping, breakages, deformations and easily allows all types of treatment.

Properties of Paulownia Timber

1. Weight – Paulownia is a very light timber. At a dry density of around 280 kg/m³ Paulownia is lighter than most common timbers. Density comparisons are Western Red Cedar (340), Meranti (580), Pine (500), Teak (750), Robinia (750).

2. Strength – With a modulus of elasticity (stiffness) of 5.6 GPa and a modulus of rupture (bending strength) of 28 MPa, Paulownia is not classified as a structural timber in its natural state. However because of its light weight, Paulownia has a high strength to weight ratio, an important feature in the various uses of the timber.

3. Deformation & Warping – The shrinkage co-efficient of Paulownia is very low compared to most timbers being 0.094 radially, 0.268 tangentially and 0.362 in volume giving the dried timber a high level of dimensional stability.

4. Hardness – The Janka hardness rating for Paulownia is low at 1.3 kN. Western Red Cedar is rated at 1.5 and Meranti 2.6. While modern treatments can substantially harden up a finished surface, Paulownia is not suitable for flooring or areas where physical damage is likely.

5. Durability – The in-ground durability rating for Paulownia is 4 and the timber should not be used for that purpose. Paulownia used for other external uses out of ground has a similar durability to western red cedar.

6. Resistance to Decay – Paulownia is highly resistant to insect attack and rot. Research carried out by Queensland Forestry Research Institute in Australia indicates the timber to be unattractive to termites. Rot showing on neglected timber tends to be surface deep only.

7. Thermal Insulation – With one of the lowest thermal conductivities for wood of just 0.07 Kcal/m/hr/Cdeg, Paulownia has an excellent heat insulation capability being one of the best heat insulating timbers and far superior to brick, concrete or steel.

8. Fire Resistance – With an auto ignition temperature of around 400 deg C (most hardwoods around 220 deg C) Paulownia is reported to have a flame spreading rate considerably below most building codes.

9. Finishing – The sap of Paulownia is not gum or resinous based, thus the application of finishing products with various solvents as carriers does not risk any interaction with the timber, contributing to the very good finishing properties of Paulownia products. The timber readily takes stains, estapols and paints with excellent finished surfaces.

10. Workability – A major feature of Paulownia timber is its ease of working. All aspects of carpentry such as machining, nailing, screwing, gluing, sanding, sawing and handling are very user friendly with no splinters, cracking or splitting and excellent take-up of glues and finishes.
